Microsoft Office for iPad

Posted by on Friday, March 28, 2014 in News.

Microsoft released Office for iPad on March 27, 2014.  Office for iPad requires an Office 365 subscription.

This means Microsoft is not offering Office for iPad through:

  • The Microsoft Home Use Program (i.e. the program that lets employees buy a perpetual license for Office for Mac or Office for Windows for home use for $9.95)
  • The Microsoft Student Option Program (i.e. the program that enables Vanderbilt students to obtain perpetual licenses for Office for Mac and Office for Windows for $0)

Currently, the Vanderbilt community has one option for obtaining Office for iPad through the Software Store – students and employees can get Office for iPad through the Office 365 University Program.  Office 365 University offers a four-year personal-use subscription for Office for $79.99.

  • Employees can purchase Office 365 University by placing an order under the “Faculty/Staff/Microsoft Select” tab
  • Students can purchase Office 365 University by placing an order under the “Students/Microsoft Select” tab

We are working to offer the Microsoft Student Advantage Program through the Software Store.  This program will provide a student with $0 access to an Office 365 ProPlus subscription.

Office 365 ProPlus includes:

  • Office 2013 for Windows (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Outlook, Lync, InfoPath)
  • Office 2011 for Mac (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Office Mobile for iPhone (Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, OneNote Mobile, Lync Mobile)
  • Office Mobile for Android (Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, OneNote Mobile, Lync Mobile)
  • Office for iPad (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • A license to run Office on up to five PCs or Macs
  • A license to run Office on up to five mobile devices
  • 25 GB of personal cloud storage
  • Free upgrades during the subscription term

Office for iPad apps are free, but you need an Office 365 subscription to unlock all of the features.  For example, you can use the free version to open Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides, but you need an Office 365 subscription to create and edit new documents, spreadsheets, and slides.  Each app requires iOS 7 or later.
