“Perfect Pourer” Mechatronics Project

Introduction/Background

Using concepts learned in ME 3204, I designed, and built a device that pours a canned beverage into a glass for its user. The assignment required the use of sensors and actuators to with the use of an Arduino UNO as a micro controller.

Below is the finished prototype.

Programmed using an Arduino Uno, stepper motors move the can and glass into the pouring position. The beverage is poured until the liquid reaches a set level in the cup. This level is determined by the placement of a photodiode light sensor and LED. The liquid obstructs the light, so the photodiode reports a light intensity level significantly less than the ambient room level. At this point, the stepper motors move back to the upright position in stages to stop the pouring process without spilling any of the beverage.
