Two times each year, the College Art Association (CAA) awards grants to publishers in art history and visual culture\u00a0to support presses in the publication of projects of the highest scholarly and intellectual merit that may not generate adequate financial return.<\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania State University Press\u00a0is publishing her book-length manuscript on the artist Lo\u00efs Mailou Jones in 2020 under the title\u00a0<em>Negotiating Traditions: Lo\u00efs Mailou Jones and the Composite Aesthetics of Blackness<\/em>. One of twelve Meiss grantees for spring 2019,\u00a0VanDiver teaches courses on modern\/contemporary African American and African art and visual culture. Her research, centered on 20th-century black women artists, African American artistic engagements with Africa, and the politics of exhibition and display, has appeared in\u00a0<em>American Art<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Archives of American Art Journal<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Space and Culture<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Callaloo<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Transition<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca VanDiver, assistant professor of African American art, recently received a Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.
