Fryd, niece of the <em>New York Times<\/em> photographer Henry Ries (1917-2004) will address the topic <em>Henry Ries\u2019 Photographs of the Brandenburg Gate, 1937-1981: Collective Trauma, Struggle, and Identity<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Ries, a Berlin-born Jew who fled Hitler with his sister (Fryd\u2019s mother) in 1938, returned to Germany after the war and often used images of mundane life to contrast the darkness of war\u2019s aftermath.
