Led by Victoria Vest, our team has engineered microscale resistance vessels with smooth muscle cells that spontaneously organize in helical architecture without requiring topographical or biochemical patterning—a critical advance that overcomes a major hurdle in vascular tissue engineering. These aligned cells exhibit a contractile phenotype and respond biochemically to vasoconstrictor signals, laying the foundation for future development of fully functional engineered blood vessels with active flow regulation.
