The Calkins laboratory is part of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and part of the research enterprise that is the Vanderbilt Eye Institute. Founded in 2004, the laboratory is dedicated to probing the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in diseases affecting the visual system.
Our objective is to leverage mechanistic findings to identify novel intracellular and extracellular targets for therapeutic interventions based on the principles of neuroprotection, neuronal self-repair and regeneration.
Our approach is largely inter-disciplinary, spanning molecular genetics and protein chemistry to electrophysiology, in vivo imaging and behavior.
