{"id":71,"date":"2019-04-30T21:27:35","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T21:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/cems\/?page_id=71"},"modified":"2020-02-26T22:44:49","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T22:44:49","slug":"materials","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/my.vanderbilt.edu\/cems\/resources\/materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Supplemental Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Worked Example Pairs (WEPs)<\/h2>\n<p>At the\u00a0core of our\u00a0materials are the Worked Example Pairs (WEPs).\u00a0Each WEP shows the mathematical work and dialogue of two hypothetical students as they attempt to solve one or more algebra problems.\u00a0Our curriculum contains four\u00a0different types of WEPs, with the types varying in what is being compared and\u00a0the instructional goal of the comparison.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Which is better?<\/em>\u00a0WEPs show the same problem solved using two different correct strategies, with the goal of understanding when and why one strategy is more efficient or easier than the other.<\/li>\n<li><em>Which is correct? <\/em>WEPs\u00a0show the same problem solved with a correct and incorrect strategy, with the goal of understanding and avoiding common errors.<\/li>\n<li><em>Why does it work? <\/em>WEPs\u00a0show the same problem solved with two different correct strategies, but with the goal of illuminating the conceptual rationale in one strategy that is less apparent in the other strategy.<\/li>\n<li><em>How do they differ? <\/em>WEPs\u00a0show two different problems solved in related ways, with an interest in illustrating what the relationship between problems and answers of the two problems reveals about an underlying mathematical concept.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Student Worksheets<\/h2>\n<p>In conjunction with the WEPs,\u00a0we have also created worksheets to facilitate class discussion about multiple solution methods.<\/p>\n<p>Each CDMS worksheet features a question or prompt at the top of the page that is related to the WEP being taught.
