*Alternative Spring Break (ASB) gives Vanderbilt University students an opportunity to spend their Spring Break working in service to communities and individuals across the country and the globe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"ASB1\"Standing at the Student Org Fair.
\n<\/span>Hearing your VUceptor say, \u201cHey, you should really check out Alternative Spring Break, you would love it.\u201d
\n<\/span>Applying, Interviewing.
\n<\/span>Meeting your group at site reveal, ASunriseB.
\n<\/span>Being slightly overwhelmed but more excited than anything.
\n<\/span>Surviving your first semester at Vanderbilt.
\n<\/span>Feeling like you are drowning during second semester.
\n<\/span>Reaching out to your VUceptor.
\n<\/span>Hearing her story of how ASB completely changed her Vanderbilt experience.
\n<\/span>Listening to her, and still going on ASB even though you desperately want to go home. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Driving to Talequah, Oklahoma.
\n<\/span>Sleeping in the lunch room at Cherokee Elder Care (#fullengagement).
\n<\/span>Setting up a glow-stick 5k without nearly enough glow-sticks.
\n<\/span>Calling your site leaders Mom and Dad.
\n<\/span>Believing them when they said ASB was going to end with a blood ritual.
\n<\/span>Seeing all the people you love from home in the people on your site.
\n<\/span>Giving your first life map.
\n<\/span>Feeling so comfortable just existing with a group of people for the first time since you came to Vanderbilt.
\n<\/span>Being reminded what happy feels like.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Coming back to Vanderbilt after a transformative experience.
\n<\/span>Knowing that 500 other people had similarly transformative experiences, but in 500 different ways.
\n<\/span>Changing how you look at community service.
\n<\/span>Understanding effective community service is about meeting an organization\u2019s needs and furthering their mission.
\n<\/span>Recognizing the power of service to bring people together.
\n<\/span>Having 11 new family members on campus.
\n<\/span>Realizing when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming back after an intense summer.
\nApplying to be a site leader.
\n<\/span>Texting your \u201cmom and dad\u201d right after your interview.
\n<\/span>Getting the call that you got it, and so did two of your best friends.
\n<\/span>Loving that shared success is the best kind.
\n<\/span>Telling every one of your friends, VUceptees, and Dore-for-a-Days to go on ASB. <\/span><\/p>\n

Getting a new group.
\n<\/span>Being so excited to love them as much as you love ASunriseB.
\n<\/span>Bonding with All You Need is LoveSB.
\n<\/span>Realizing you objectively have the coolest, funniest, nicest participants ever.
\n<\/span>Glowing with excitement as spring break finally arrives. <\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>Jamming to Kygo on the way to Beaufort, South Carolina.
\nGiving your life map first.
\n<\/span>Buying fruit snacks for your group.
\n<\/span>Volunteering at Mossy Oaks Elementary School.
\n<\/span>Explaining parallel lines, area, and perimeter to fourth graders.
\n<\/span>Watching your participants KILLING THE GAME with their kids.
\n<\/span>Being so, so proud of your group.
\n<\/span>Buying more fruit snacks.
\n<\/span>Seeing the elementary school students love the people you love.
\n<\/span>Convincing one of your participants that you were going to lead a blood ritual.
\n<\/span>Witnessing the most beautiful sunset yet together.
\n<\/span>Realizing that even though someone might be your polar opposite on the surface, you might actually get along and connect with them really, really well.
\n<\/span>Having a perfect last afternoon.
\n<\/span>Loving and appreciating everyone in your group more than you can put into words. <\/span><\/p>\n

Coming back from ASB.
\n<\/span>Seeing all your friends once they have returned from their ASBs.
\n<\/span>Hearing about their ASBs.
\n<\/span>Telling them all how fantastic your group was and how much you loved your service.
\n<\/span>Getting dinner with your site from last year.
\n<\/span>Getting dinner with your site from this year.
\n<\/span>Feeling like your heart is going to burst with happiness and pride every time.
\n<\/span>Finally understanding why your VUceptor told you ASB was going to change the way you see and exist at Vanderbilt.
\n<\/span>Texting her, saying thank you, thank you, thank you.
\n<\/span>Understanding that when you go and love someone for exactly who they are, they are instantly empowered.
\n<\/span>Looking at a stranger on campus, any stranger on campus, and knowing how much you might find in common with them, or learn from them, or love them, for exactly who they are.<\/span><\/p>\n
