He was awarded a VA Career Development Award in 2001 and soon after obtained R-01 grant funding from the National Cancer Institute to study quality of life in prostate cancer survivors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Dr. Penson received the <a title=\"DFP AUA Gallagher Award\" href=\"http:\/\/www.auanet.org\/advnews\/gallagher-health-policy-scholar-243.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">AUA G. James Gallagher Health Policy Scholar <\/a>award presented to urologists who demonstrate a commitment to health policy.\u00a0He then served as Associate Professor of Urology and Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California from 2004 to 2009.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In August 2009,\u00a0Dr. Penson\u00a0joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University as Professor of <a title=\"DFP Urologic Surgery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mc.vanderbilt.edu\/root\/vumc.php?site=urologicsurgery\" target=\"_blank\">Urologic Surgery<\/a> and Director of the <a title=\"CSQOR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mc.vanderbilt.edu\/root\/vumc.php?site=csqor&amp;doc=\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research <\/a>in the <a title=\"VUMC IMPH\" href=\"http:\/\/medicineandpublichealth.vanderbilt.edu\/imph.php?userid=599505477&amp;id=\" target=\"_blank\">Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine and Public Health<\/a>. \u00a0Dr. Penson maintains a <a title=\"Vanderbilt Health Urology Clinic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vanderbilthealth.com\/urology\/\" target=\"_blank\">clinical practice in urologic oncology<\/a> at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2013, Dr. Penson was\u00a0awarded the <span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: small\">Paul V. Hamilton, M.D. and Virginia E.
