I retired in August 2024, but I occasionally teach and work with a remaining PhD\u00a0 student and a recent PhD graduate on research. Over the years, my research, teaching, and service were in artificial intelligence, including machine learning and cognitive modeling. In recent years I focused on the nexus of computational creativity and sustainability. Most recently, and currently, my associates and I are exploring the area of “AI cognition” or “AI cognitive psychology”<\/a>, addressing questions on whether AIs exhibit behaviors that are analog to human cognitive phenomena, such as typicality, priming, basic level, fan effects, and theory of mind.<\/p>\n

I was a faculty member in residence, with my wife, at McGill Hall<\/a> and Warren College<\/a>, work for which I received the Chancellor’s Cup in 2006, the KC Potter Award in 2012, and the Outstanding Service Award in 2019.<\/p>\n

I served as an NSF Program Director (2007-2010) overseeing AI and ML research awards, as well as contributing to sustainability efforts at NSF, for which I received a Director’s Award for excellence in program management. My experience at NSF is given on the CRA\/CCC blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n
