EES 5891 Geochemical Modeling

Students learn basic concepts of geochemistry (thermodynamics, phase equilibria, adsorption, and kinetics) and of geochemical modeling.  Model types include speciation and solubility, reaction path, inverse mass balance, kinetic, and coupled reactive transport.  Case studies include rock weathering, contamination of groundwater with uranium from mine tailings, and deep well injection of wastewater.

EES 4600 Geochemistry

Application of chemistry to study the distribution and cycling of elements in the crust of the earth. Includes chemical bonding and crystallization, phase rules and phase diagrams, chemical equilibria, theories on the origin of elements, earth, ocean, atmosphere, and crust.

EES 4300 Natural Resources

How natural resources are formed, produced, and used. Geologic controls on resource distribution in space and time. Analysis of historical trends and prediction of future resource availability. Environmental impacts of mining, use, and disposal. Fossil fuels, alternative energy sources, nuclear fuels, metals, industrial minerals, water, soil, and elements used in agriculture. Synthesis of relevant knowledge from the geosciences, chemistry, engineering, and economics.

EES 4750  Sustainability: An Environmental Science Perspective

Principles, problems, and solutions of environmental sustainability, with a focus on the links among the environment, society, and economy.
