How Tos

This is how you…

Make a shortcut to a server folder (on a PC):

  • Determine the location path of the folder you want to access.  This is easiest to accomplish by simply looking at the path in the location above one of your co-workes machines where it is already setup. For this example we will use the triad folder on the kc-bird share on the ITS server “groups-nas1″.  The location path of that folder is: \\vfile.vanderbilt.edu\kc-bird\Triad (note:”vfile.vanderbilt.edu” is the server name. kc-bird is a shared folder on that server)
  • Be sure you have permission to access the folder in question.  If you don’t know or are new here in a working group, send an email to kctech@vanderbilt.edu and include your VUNetwork ID and the path (not your password please) and ask us to check it.  (note: Your VUNetID is usually what you use to log on to your computer at Vanderbilt).
  • Right click on your desktop and the left click on new… then shortcut…
  • In the location box enter the location path starting with two backslashes ‘\\’.
  • Click next and name the shortcut whatever you like.  You don’t have to use the name it gives you but you can.
  • Click next and you will have a shortcut to that location on your desktop.
  • If it asks for a password when you open the shortcut put vanderbilt\yournetid and your epassword in the password box.
  • Enjoy, that shortcut should remain on your desktop unless you delete it.  If you do delete the shortcut, it will just delete the shortcut, not the folder on the server.  You can delete shortcuts by dragging them to the trash.
