This\u00a0winter it is <strong>January 24 &#8211; 28, 2019<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/1QmFHx9BOx2p-W0cCmuzxEjFNfAkQxcFQbmH2_oUAUeY\">Sign up here<\/a>\u00a0to join the\u00a0math club&#8217;s MCM group.<\/p>\n<h2>What is it like?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You compete in teams of three. (You can form your own team, or the math club can match-make.) On Thursday evening, 6 problems are released. Your team picks one problem to solve. Over the next 4 days (until Monday afternoon), your team must<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create a mathematical model that fits the problem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work with the model to find solutions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Write up your work in a full technical report and nontechnical executive summary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This contest is intense (it consumes most of your weekend), but lots of fun and highly rewarding. It\u2019s also great practice for many career paths, including those in government, industry, and academia. (Though it\u2019s \u201capplied\u201d math, it\u2019s still great practice if you prefer \u201cpure\u201d math.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What else is involved?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While you can register on your own (you just need a faculty member to sign you up), there are some benefits to registering through the math club.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are working with various departments to <strong>cover the registration fee<\/strong> ($100 per team)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We organize <strong>practices<\/strong> in the weeks leading up to the contest<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We hold a post-contest <strong>presentation night<\/strong>, where your team presents your solution<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Sample problems<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.comap.com\/undergraduate\/contests\/mcm\/previous-contests.php\">https:\/\/www.comap.com\/undergraduate\/contests\/mcm\/previous-contests.php<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mathematical Contest in Modeling\u00a0(MCM) challenges three-person undergraduate teams to design and communicate rigorous mathematical solutions to real-world problems.
