Nikita grew up in Kostanay, a city in northern Kazakhstan. He received a BS degree in human biology from Nazarbayev University. His undergraduate research focused on neuroprotective effects of metformin in zebrafish model of ischemic stroke. Later Nikita did an internship at Vanderbilt university and studied cancer cell subpopulations under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Irish. Currently, he is interested in combining experimentation and computational modeling to better understand mitochondrial diseases. His experimental project is focused on tissue-specific differences in heteroplasmy regulation.
Outside of the lab Nikita enjoys hiking, fishing, hanging out with friends and going to the gym.
