Notes from a Former Student

My name is Isabel, and I was part of the Maymester in Bologna in 2024.

Bologna is a small, walkable city in the heart of the Emilia Romagna region. With a city feel near the parks and greenery of Italy, you can experience it all! Here’s a guide to Bologna:

Transportation

The city is very walkable, and although advised to go places with a parter, it is also very safe.

The cities bus system is easy to navigate with busses passing through each stop every few minutes. You can buy a bus pass or pay ~1 euro per ride when you get on.

The central train station can access many places across Italy, and has a bus stop right out front bringing you there. From here you can also take a tram to the airport.

The Bologna Airport (BLQ) is a small airport that is easy to access through the tram.

Taxis can be called for a low fare, but do take some time to come. Ubers are not a reliable option in Bologna.

Markets and Pharmacies

Pharmacies are located every few blocks. Here you can get toiletry items.

Markets are scattered all throughout Bologna, mainly in the center of town, and have fresh food for you to buy.

Dining

You can’t go wrong with food in Bologna. The dining options all exceed expectations. Most places have an option to read menus in English.

There are more than just Italian restaurants in Bologna, but they are definitely the best.

Don’t forget to try mortadella- the meat for the region. The Mo Lab is a great spot to try it on a sandwich, but it is also offered on most charcuterie options.

Weather

The weather will range in May, with days that feel warm and some cold. It is advised to bring a light jacket for chillier days and warmer weather clothing for the hotter ones.

It rains often during this season, so an umbrella is helpful.

Attractions

Bologna has a unique history. It is home to a university, and praised on its education. Here are some things you can visit while in Bologna:

  • Piazza Galvani
  • Basilica di San Paolo Maggiore
