ASSIGNMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n Grade assessment will be based on the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n Attendance and active participation\u00a0are expected and mandatory for all classes and events <\/span>(30%)<\/b>.\u00a0Note that \u201cexcellent participation\u201d in the context of a Maymester course is somewhat different than in a typical course. Students are expected to be present, on time, alert, engaged, taking notes, and asking questions during class. Outside of class, the expectation is that students behave in a manner that is safe, responsible and respectful\u00a0at all times, not just during class time.<\/span><\/p>\n Unexcused absences (i.e., without a doctor\u2019s note) will negatively affect your overall grade in the following manner: Each unexcused absence will result in THREE points being deducted from your overall course grade!<\/span><\/p>\n Note that habitual tardiness will also be noted and will also negatively impact your grade: Three tardies will result in THREE points being deducted from your overall course grade.<\/span><\/p>\n Pre-class preparation: Students will be expected to know the items on the following list before the course begins.<\/span><\/p>\n Identify on a map of Rome (see map below): JANICULUM, TRASTEVERE, CAPITOLINE HILL, PALATINE HILL, QUIRINAL HILL, CAELIAN HILL, ESQUILINE HILL, FORUM, FIELD OF MARS (Aka CAMPUS MARTIUS), TIBER RIVER, TESTACCIO, VATICAN<\/strong><\/p>\n Identify on a map of Italy: POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, CUMAE, SICILY, TIVOLI<\/strong><\/p>\n Dates: Traditional founding of Rome, Traditional founding of the Republic, 2nd Punic War;\u00a0Death of Julius Caesar, Battle of Actium, Year of Four Emperors; Eruption of Vesuvius, Edict of Milan<\/strong><\/p>\n People: Romulus, Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Vergil, Cicero, Suetonius, Seneca, Livia<\/strong><\/p>\n Emperors:<\/strong><\/p>\n Julio-Claudians \u2013 Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero<\/strong><\/p>\n Flavians: Vespasian, Titus, Domitian<\/strong><\/p>\n Five \u201cGood\u201d Emperors: Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius<\/strong><\/p>\n Others: Commodus, Caracalla, Constantine<\/strong><\/p>\n I recommend watching the BBC series,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cMeet the Romans\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on youtube as part of your pre-class preparation well.<\/span><\/p>\n There will be a\u00a0CHRONOLOGY\/GEOGRAPHY QUIZ<\/strong>\u00a0covering this material in the first few days of the course <\/span>(10%)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n TWO EXAMS<\/strong>\u00a0during the term\u00a0 will assess your understanding of the readings, lectures and site-visits <\/span>(12% each = 24% overall). <\/b>Format is multiple choice and short answer questions.<\/span><\/p>\n Each student will complete THREE\u00a0WRITING ASSIGNMENTS<\/strong>\u00a0over the course of the term <\/span>(12% each = 36% overall)<\/b>. These may include\u00a0a writing prompt, an article review, or an object description.
