Biography<\/span><\/h3>\n

Michael K. Slayton is an American composer and educator, currently serving as Associate Professor of\u00a0Composition & Theory\u00a0at\u00a0Vanderbilt University’s\u00a0Blair School of Music<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"Slayton\u00a0has composed works in a cross-section of musical genres, with specific emphasis on chamber music.\u00a0His\u00a0continuing dedication to the\u00a0value of\u00a0artistic exchange\u00a0has\u00a0afforded him opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0write\u00a0for\u00a0distinguished performers all over the world. His music, published by ACA, Inc.<\/a> (BMI), is regularly programmed in the U.S. and abroad, including Chemnitz, Seitz, Leipzig, Droyssig, and Weimar, Germany; Graz, Austria;\u00a0Paris,Tours, and Marquette-lez-Lille, France; Kristiansund, Norway; Aviero, Portugal; Brussles, Belgium; Johannesburg and Potchefstroom, South Africa; London, UK;\u00a0and New York, NY.<\/p>\n

Recent works include Kleemation<\/strong> (2016), commissioned by oboist Jared Hauser;\u00a0Dreamers’ Meadows<\/strong> (2015), commissioned by The Atlantic Ensemble<\/a>; Mir\u00f3<\/span><\/strong>rs<\/strong> (2013); Meditation and Reflections, for viola <\/strong>(2012), commissioned by violist\u00a0Christian Liberty Marshall<\/a>; Fifth Prelude for Orchestra <\/strong>(2011), commissioned by\u00a0Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra <\/a>(Marcello Bussiki, director); <\/span>Sursum<\/strong> (2010), commissioned by the <\/span>Kreutzer Quartet<\/a>, London; and <\/span>A Hideous Veil <\/strong>(2010)<\/strong>, commissioned by <\/span>Blair Percussion Vortex <\/a>(Michael Holland, director).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Since moving to Nashville in 1999, Slayton has received numerous commissions for choral, solo, orchestral and chamber works, including two\u00a0pieces for the Nashville Ballet<\/a>. During his M.M. and D.M.A. studies at the Moore\u2019s School of Music <\/a>(Houston, TX), Slayton was under the tutelage of composers Michael Horvit<\/a> (see here<\/a> also) and\u00a0David Ashley White<\/a>, and distinguished musicologist and author Howard Pollack<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Slayton is author\/editor-in-chief of Women of Influence in Contemporary Music <\/a><\/em>(Scarecrow Press, 2011), a book detailing the lives and music of several of America\u2019s notable women in composition, including\u00a0Elizabeth R. Austin<\/a>, Susan Botti<\/a>, Gabriela Lena Frank<\/a>, Jennifer Higdon<\/a>, Libby Larsen<\/a>, Tania Le\u00f3n<\/a>, Cindy McTee<\/a>, Marga Richter<\/a>, Judith\u00a0Shatin<\/a>. A member of the American Composer\u2019s Alliance<\/a><\/em>, Society of Composers, Inc<\/em>.<\/a>, the College Music Society<\/a><\/em>, Connecticut Composers, Inc<\/em>.<\/a>, and Broadcast Music, Inc<\/em>.<\/a>, Michael Slayton continues to be an active participant in the national and international music community.<\/p>\n
