Video Formative Feedback (VFF)
Project TAU is a participatory design research project, as the professional development process that we introduce to teachers is driven by teachers’ own inquiry questions. We support teachers through a learning cycle that we call VFF, which unfolds as follows:
(a) the teacher identifies a question of interest (e.g., Am I intervening with groups equitably?);
(b) the teacher identifies three focal student groups to record;
(c) the research team documents a lesson with the question in mind, using a whole-class tablet camera mounted on a Swivl tripod, GoPro 360 cameras for the three student groups, and a GoPro point-of-view camera attached to the teacher;
(d) the team transcribes the teacher’s embodied movements using Mondrian Transcription;
(e) the team reviews the video and visualizes the teacher’s movement and conversation with the Interaction Geography Slicer (IGS), with the teacher’s question in mind, identifying clips that support co-inquiry and create a visual representation of the teachers’ movement;
(f) the teacher, their school-based colleagues, and members of the research team meet to view and discuss the clips and movement representation in light of the teacher’s question.
