Join the celebration at the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center (Rec) as we recognize Employee Health and Fitness Day on May 2nd.   This annual all-day event is held to showcase numerous opportunities available to support the Vanderbilt community in being active in the workplace.

 

Enjoy this opportunity for complimentary full access to the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center.  Join a group fitness class, enjoy a swim, try the rock climbing wall, or grab a quick workout! Feel free to stop by the Welcome Desk to enjoy a facility tour by one the Rec staff members.

 

  • From 12 – 2 p.m, meet the Rec’s personal trainers and ask your questions about personal fitness goals.
  • From 4-7 p.m., bring your friends and family to enjoy bowling in our Rec four lane bowling alley.

The Rec is preparing for a busy weekend, April 13-April 15. In preparation, please take note of the following updates, closures, and notices.

Closures:

  • Aux Gym:  closed from 5pm on Friday, April 13th thru Saturday, April 15th at 10pm
  • Gym Courts 1-3:  Closed Saturday, April 14th from 8am – 4pm

Group Fitness Updates:

  • 8:30 – 9:30 am Yoga-Ali is subbing for Grace

Studying for exams can be stressful… all of your favorite study spots are taken, you’re hangry, and you want to ace your finals. The Rec is the perfect solution for your stress!

The Rec is open 24/7 from April 23 at 11 p.m. through 5 a.m. on May 3!  Access the Rec with your Commodore Card,  and utilize study spaces throughout the facility.  Come study in our conference rooms, play a game of basketball, re-energize with a snack, take a quick catnap on our sofas, and enjoy our many other stress relieving activities! The opportunities are abundant and accessible to all students!

Throughout the week, there will be therapy dogs, free food, late night yoga, chair massages, Hammock-Ville, ping pong, coloring books, Top Secret Golf, and MORE!

  • April 26: Chair Massages: 6-8 p.m. – Rec Lounge

Looking for a way to get outside this spring, switch up your workout, increase your flexibility, or challenge your strength?
Join the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center for a 30-minute outdoor yoga class and 30-minute meditation class, led by Dean Beasley, that will rejuvenate and energize your afternoon. Check out this opportunity for you to enjoy spring weather in Tennessee at Wyatt Lawn at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothing. Yoga mats will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside of the Ingram Commons Center.

Registration for the AQUA ‘DORES Spring Clinic is available online NOW at the Vanderbilt Recreation & Wellness Center (Rec).  Do you have a swimmer, between ages 6-17, who is interested in a summer swim team?  Learn more about the Aqua ‘DORES summer team and attend the Spring Clinic. The AQUA ‘DORES Spring Clinic is for past members and prospective swimmers.   Participants work in a team setting under the direction of a USA Swimming certified coach to refine strokes, increase endurance, and develop positive swim competition habits.

 

Has your child advanced out of swim lessons and is interested in a summer team? Check out the spring clinic to see if the Aqua ‘DORES swim team is a fit for you!

 

The AQUA ‘DORES clinic occurs 3 days a week over a span of 2 weeks. The clinic includes a total of 6 practices.

 

  • $180: April 16-18, 2018 and April 23-25, 2018. Includes six 1.5 hour practices.
  • Ages: 6-17 yrs.
  • Practices: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for 2 weeks from 4:30p.m.-6:00 p.m.
  • Requirements – Participants must have a knowledge of swimming and be able to complete a full 25 yd., continuous swim in a water depth of 10 feet without the aid of flotation devices. (Not a substitute for swim lessons.)
  • Thursdays are reserved for makeup practices in case of inclement weather

 

Registration for the AQUA ‘DORES Spring Clinic requires each participant to have a Rec account:

  • If you are a student/Rec member, you already have an account and you can log-in to add your child to your profile and register for the clinic.
  • If you are not a VU student or member, please create an account at https://rec.vanderbilt.edu/Account/Registerby selecting the “Sign Up” button. Once you have created an account, you can add your child to your profile and will be able to register for the clinic.

Join Tammy Algood, spokesperson for the statewide “Pick Tennessee Products” campaign at the upcoming Vandy Cooks on April 6.  Tammy will share recipes and tips for creating delicious dishes with Tennessee’s local food.  This presentation will be in held in the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center teaching kitchen Friday, April 6th from noon to 1 p.m.

 

Ms. Algood writes about food for The Tennessean and Tennessee Magazine. As a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, she also develops recipes for the website at www.picktnproducts.org. Broadcast appearances include: Nashville’s local ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates as well as statewide on PBS. Ms. Algood can also be seen nationally on the HGTV and DIY networks.

 

Vandy Cooks is provided monthly by a partnership with the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center, Health Plus, and their many celebrated food experts.

Do you want to learn how to scuba dive? Discover new adventures? Or, see the world beneath the waves? This semester, the Rec is hosting Scuba Shack’s PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Certification. The certification course is open to Vanderbilt University faculty, staff, students, and Rec members!

 

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle. The course will take place in a Rec classroom, the Rec pool and local dive sites; under the supervision of your PADI Instructor.

The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three phases: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives and Open Water Dives.

 

The course includes: PADI Textbook & all materials, professional Instruction, use of scuba gear for pool training and open water training, PADI Open Water Certification Card, and Open Water dive site admittance fees. Not Included: Personal student gear (mask, fins, snorkel, boots) – Scuba Shack has special package pricing for gear for students who are registered for the course.
