Effect of Amitriptyline and Escitalopram on Functional Dyspepsia

In the conclusion to their randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigating the effect of amitriptyline and escitalopram in functional dyspepsia (FD), Talley et al1 report that “amitriptyline appeared beneficial in FD”. In the editorial on this article,2 Hasler and Koch state that “significant treatment effects over 12 weeks were seen, with the greatest benefits observed with amitriptyline and lesser responses noted with escitalopram and placebo”. In my opinion, these statements are not sufficiently supported by the data presented by Talley et al.
