Aligning Quality With the Academic Mission: A Quality Improvement and Delivery Science Program in Gastroenterology

Academic medical centers are distinguished by their tripartite mission of advancing clinical care, education, and research. Many gastroenterologists choose the academic environment owing to the rapid change in clinical and scientific aspects of care for digestive and liver diseases.1 However, changes in health care delivery financing, research funding, and regulatory requirements pose threats to this model, given a focus on the cost and value of care.2 Medical centers must continue to facilitate an environment where members can pursue meaningful activities across these missions, but also have a funding model and infrastructure to sustain these efforts.
