Question: A 64-year-old physician was referred for outpatient esophagogastroduodenoscopy after 5 years of intermittent solid food dysphagia, several episodes of esophageal food impaction over the last year, and a recent barium study demonstrating a ring-like esophageal stenosis (Figure A). His medical history included hypertension, eczema, and allergic rhinitis. Prior medications were significant for potassium chloride and alendronate sodium tablets. His weight, appetite, and bowel habits were stable, and physical examination was unremarkable.
