Question: A 51-year-old man complained of a dry cough, dysphagia, odynophagia, and melena for 10 months. He had a >30 pack-years smoking history, but did not consume an excessive amount of alcohol. He had no history of dyspnea, respiratory tract bleeding, or massive hemorrhage of the gastrointestinal tract. No clinically important signs were found during physical examination. Laboratory results exhibited a positive hemoccult stool test and mild anemia (hemoglobin, 107 g/L). The patient was found to have a large, soft tissue density mass in the upper esophagus on a computed tomography scan (Figure A, white arrow). Continue reading →
