A Curmudgeon Reflects on Half a Century of Gastrointestinal Pathology

As a surgical pathologist, I have concentrated on the study and diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases for 50 years. During my training, there were only a few pathologists worldwide who were known for their expertise in GI diseases, including Basil Morson in the United Kingdom, Kurt Elster in Germany, Francois Potet in France, and Elson Helwig, Roy Shorter, and Malcolm Dockerty in the United States. I have watched this specialty evolve, with its changes dictated by both advances in pathology and the development and implementation of new endoscopic technology.
