A Surprising Case of Acute Diarrhea in the South of France

Question: A 60-year-old woman presented to our hospital in the South of France in June 2015 with acute severe feverish diarrhea: 10 to 15 stools per day, abdominal pain for 20 days, and a weight loss of 10 kg. She had no medical history, only underwent hormonal replacement therapy and did not report any recent traveling activity. A physical examination showed an elevated body temperature of 39.1°C, global abdominal pain, and lower limb edema. Examination was otherwise normal.
