Medical nutrition is an area that is underrepresented in medical school curricula and is not emphasized on national board examinations creating knowledge gaps in hospital-based practices.1 Malnutrition occurs in one-third to one-half of all adult patients admitted to the hospital and one-third of normally nourished adults become malnourished during their hospitalization.2 Malnutrition has been linked to an increased duration of hospital stay, higher rates of 30-day readmissions, and adverse health outcomes by imparting $15.5 billion in direct medical costs in the United States.
