The Irony of Long-term Acid Suppression

The effect of acid suppression on decreasing non-heme intestinal iron absorption has been known for decades.1 The clinical implications of this effect in the population, however, has not been great because human intestinal iron absorption is dominated by heme iron absorption which may not be affected by changes in intestinal pH. Previous studies have suggested that the use of proton pump inhibitors could inhibit iron absorption in hemochromatosis patients and could be an adjunct to other therapies such as therapeutic phlebotomy.
