Complication of Esophageal Button Battery Ingestion

Question: A 13-month-old boy was transferred to this tertiary children’s hospital 1 week after successful removal of ingested esophageal button battery. The battery had been in place for approximately 6 hours at the upper esophageal sphincter. Postoperatively, he developed respiratory distress, characterized by stridor, sternal and subcostal retractions, and tachypnea, which was unresponsive to systemic steroids and helium-oxygen treatment.
