Proton Pump Inhibitors and Chronic Kidney Disease: Is It Related to the Accumulation of Toxic Breakdown Products Spontaneously Formed in the Enteric-Protected Tablets?

We took note with great interest of the paper by Klatte et al entitled “Association Between Proton Pump Inhibitor Use and Risk of Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease.”1 In this broad retrospective study, these authors demonstrated that initiation of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and cumulative exposure associate with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease progression. This issue regarding the prolonged use of PPIs is of a major concern, because they are widely used and probably the most prescribed medication in the world.
