Reducing Admissions for Cirrhotics: The Creation of an Emergency Department Observation Unit Protocol for Paracenteses

Patients with cirrhosis have high admission and readmission rates, resulting in burdens to both patients and the health care system. At the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, 30-day readmission rates for cirrhotic patients range from 26% to 29%. This study sought to find targetable opportunities to prevent admissions while providing safe triage and care.
