Standardizing the Care of Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis Inpatients at an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Referral Hospital

Patients who present with acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) are at high risk for short-term colectomy. Despite consensus guidelines on the management of inpatient ASUC, variations in practice exist that can delay time-sensitive therapy. The variability in practice patterns at our institution has previously been published. The aim of this project is to implement a standardized care pathway for patients who present with ASUC, leveraging our EMR to decrease time to IV steroid and infliximab administration with the goal of decreasing colectomy rate and length of stay.
