Host sorbitol and bacterial sorbitol utilization promote C. difficile infection in inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a widespread gastrointestinal inflammatory disorder with globally increasing incidence. Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) often occurs in patients with intestinal dysbiosis, such as after antibiotic therapy. IBD patients have increased incidence of CDI, and the clinical outcome of IBD is reportedly worsened by CDI. However, the underlying reasons remain poorly understood.
