Reimagining Gastroenterology Fellowship Training: The Third Year of the Future

Implementing change in medical education is increasingly being recognized as an opportunity “to best address the workplace needs of our current and future health care system.”1 Capable physicians provide safe, equitable, and patient-centered care. They adjust to changing clinical practice climates, work and communicate professionally in teams, critically appraise their performance, can receive constructive feedback, and engage in self-reflection.2 Competency-based education has been gaining momentum worldwide since the 1990s,3 but the implementation of the framework has varied widely.
