Impact of Guided Relaxation and Music on Sedation Use in the Endoscopy Suite: A Quality Improvement Project

Endoscopies are often anxiety-provoking for patients. Moderate sedation is used to minimize discomfort and anxiety and improve patient tolerance. In addition to side effects from medications, commonly a benzodiazepine with an opiate, sedation increases procedure time as well as post-endoscopy recovery, both of which increase cost of care. Studies have shown variable effects of relaxation music with sedation, ranging from improved patient satisfaction to decreased sedation use, and lower discomfort scores.
