Important Study Adds to Understanding of the Pathophysiology of Visceral Hypersensitivity but Raises More Questions Than it Answers

I read with great interest the article by Cenac et al1 exploring the hypothesis that an increased level of 5(6)-epoxy-8Z,11Z,14Z-eicosatrienoic acid (5,6-EET) that stimulates transient receptor potential channel 4 (TRPV4) receptors cause hyperexcitability of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons. These events may explain the mechanism of visceral hypersensitivity in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). However, the paper raises several important questions.
