Right Upper Abdominal Distension and Discomfort Caused by a Massive Hepatic Tumor

Question: A 42-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a 1-year history of right upper abdominal distension and discomfort that had worsened for the past month. She had no history of liver cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Physical examination revealed fullness and slight tenderness of the right upper abdomen. Laboratory examination revealed that serum gamma-glutamyl transferase was elevated (227 U/L; normal range, 7-45); other laboratory test results, including tumor marker of alpha-fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen were all within normal ranges.
