“Skip the Drips”: An Initiative to Promote the Appropriate Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors in Patients With Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are part of the standard of therapy in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) recommend PPI use. In the pre-endoscopy setting, PPIs decrease rates of high-risk stigmata found on endoscopy and the need for endoscopic therapy. In the post-endoscopy setting, PPIs via continuous infusion (PPI drip) for 72 hours in patients who have ulcers with high-risk stigmata reduce the rates of rebleeding, surgery, and mortality.
