Compliance With and Timing of Prophylactic Antibiotic Administration and Risk of Peristomal Wound Infection After Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy

Current guidelines suggest prophylactic antibiotics should be administered 30 minutes before percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement in order to reduce gastrostomy site infections. We observed variations in administration of prophylactic antibiotics and initiated a quality-improvement project to determine the significance of these variations. This study was performed to evaluate compliance with prophylactic antibiotic administration before PEG and to observe differences in infection rates based on timing of administration of antibiotic prophylaxis.
