The Eye of a Stranger

Question: A 48-year-old woman was referred to the department of gastroenterology for evaluation of a tracheoesophageal (TE) fistula. She was a diabetic and hypertensive with a history of having suffered from myocardial infarction 5 years ago. The patient had undergone craniectomy for decompression of traumatic subdural hematoma after having fallen down a flight of stairs about a month ago. There were no complications after the operation, but because her self-respiration was weak, a tracheostomy was performed to continue respiratory support.
