Liver and Gallbladder Herniation

Question: An elderly 98-year-old woman with a medical history of Alzheimer’s disease, gout, and hypertension presented to the hospital complaining of lower back pain. The patient had no past surgical history. On physical examination, the patient had a nontender, palpable mass protruding from the right lateral side just below the ribs. The patient had no acute abnormality in laboratory blood work. For further workup, the patient underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis.
