Biopsy and Empiric Dilation Practices in Veterans with Dysphagia and Normal Appearing Esophagus

ASGE and ACG guidelines recommend performing EGD for patients presenting with dysphagia. Both societies suggest that even if the esophageal mucosa appears normal, two to four proximal and distal esophageal biopsies should be obtained to evaluate for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Additionally, while some endoscopists advocate for empiric dilation in patients with dysphagia and normal endoscopy, ASGE guidelines do not recommend this practice. Thus, our aim was to determine the frequency of biopsy and empiric dilation in veterans who presented with dysphagia and had normal appearing esophageal mucosa.
