How to Integrate a Medical Ethics Curriculum into Gastroenterology Fellowships

Clinical medical ethics aims to improve the quality of patient care by addressing frequently arising ethical issues and is pervasive in our daily routine as physicians. The field of gastroenterology has several inherent ethical issues that are not often explicitly taught during fellowship. As gastroenterologists and hepatologists, we often address the four core principles of medical ethics—as we contemplate the risks and benefits of procedures (beneficence/non-maleficence), through the informed consent process prior to endoscopy (autonomy), and in the decision underlying organ allocation in liver transplantation (justice).
