An Unusual Rash During Evaluation for Chronic Pancreatitis

Question: A 34-year-old man with recurrent alcoholic pancreatitis presented for evaluation of abdominal pain related to chronic calcific pancreatitis. He also had a history of alcoholic liver disease with previous ascites and hepatic encephalopathy. He continued to consume alcohol, albeit <2 drinks per day, and smoke 1 pack of cigarettes per day. He also complained of a new skin rash on his arms. The rash began 1 month previously on the extensor surface of his left forearm. The margin was well-demarcated and extended from elbow to fingers (Figure A, B).
