Isthmus Time Is Here: Runx1 Identifies Mucosal Stem Cells in the Gastric Corpus

The last decade has seen a surge in investigation of stem cell populations in the gastrointestinal tract, establishing LGR5 as the gold standard marker of active stem cells in the bases of intestinal crypts.1 Other stem cell markers, including HOPX, BMI1, and LRIG1, have been identified in the intestine2 and the gastric antrum.3 The stem cell lineages that reside in the isthmus of glands in the acid-secreting gastric corpus, however, have remained elusive. In the corpus, the proliferative stem cell resides in an unusual location within the “isthmus” zone of the gastric unit nearer the surface.
