Scheuer’s Liver Biopsy Interpretation, 9th Edition

Liver biopsy used to be a common procedure for the evaluation of abnormal liver chemistries. The goal was to obtain an adequate tissue specimen, and the diagnosis and staging of many liver disorders was based on histopathologic analysis. Today, the diagnosis of many liver disorders is based on serology, virologic, and genetic testing; various imaging techniques (ultrasound examination, computed tomography scans, and/or magnetic resonance imaging); and elastography is used to stage hepatic fibrosis.
