STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS OF BUTYRATE REVEAL TEMPLATES FOR INTESTINAL EPITHELIAL HIF STABILIZERS

Microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids, particularly butyrate (BA), show multiple beneficial influences on health. In the colon, BA ranges from 10-20 mM and up to 99% is utilized as a metabolic fuel by the mucosa. BA plays a key role in epithelial barrier regulation, reduces inflammation, and regulates cell growth and differentiation. There are multiple mechanisms by which BA contributes to gut health, many due to its regulatory capacity for gene expression. Our group reported (PMID: 34190032) a direct influence of BA on the stabilization of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF).
