Spontaneous portosystemic shunts (SPSSs) have been associated with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Little is known about their prevalence among patients with cirrhosis or clinical effects. We investigated the prevalence and characteristics of SPSSs in patients with cirrhosis and their outcomes.
