Secretion of Hepatitis C Virus Replication Intermediates Reduces Activation of Toll Like Receptor 3 in Hepatocytes

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections often persist lifelong. We have identified a novel viral immune evasion mechanism based on the secretion of viral double stranded RNA from infected cells in extracellular vesicles. Thereby the virus is less efficiently recognized, helping to maintain persistence.
