Reflections on Mentorship on the Occasion of Dr Kurt J. Isselbacher’s 90th Birthday

It seems that until relatively recently, mentorship was hardly a topic of comment in academic discourse. Without doubt, the historical neglect of the role of mentors as appropriate for explicit discussion was a significant omission. However, within a short period, the definition of mentor has become increasingly broad, and the inflation of the mentor designation threatens to diminish the significance of the role for the expectations it should warrant. An exception illustrates a true benchmark for the distinction of “mentor.”
