Does Autophagy Promote or Protect Against the Pathogenesis of Pancreatitis?

We read with great interest the recently published paper from Dolai et al,1 in which they demonstrated novel mechanistic insights regarding the role of syntaxin 2 (STX2), a t-SNARE protein, in the pathogenesis of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease caused by the damage of the exocrine acinar cells, which are highly polarized epithelial cells that store the zymogen granules (ZGs). Although the mechanisms for the pathogenesis of pancreatitis remain incompletely known, one of the most popular hypothesizes is the intra-acinar activation of trypsinogen.
